Want To Keep Your Brain Sharp? Take Up A New Hobby
13/09/2010 by FeedCrazy.
When it comes to being mentally fit, we’re more likely to think of crossword puzzles than quilting. But neuroscientists have a theory that learning a challenging new skill, language, or musical instrument, may be even more an effective tool than mental exercise at keeping the brain in good shape.
Memory is one of the least understood areas of the brain, and unfortunately there is no magic pill or drug that can improve it. But researchers from the United States and Europe recently issued a consensus statement on what we do know about maintaining brain fitness (which includes not only memory, but also reasoning, attention and speed of processing). The conclusion was that three things are the most important: physical exercise, mental exercise, and good health habits.
In an attempt to improve their brain function, many older Americans are stocking up on supplements and software programs, but it’s important to realize that there’s a lot of products on the market that don’t necessarily work. Many experts agree that one shouldn’t count on supplements. The rationale behind Ginkgo Biloba is relevant, but there is no scientific evidence that it works. Also, it’s important to remember to steer clear of anything that promises to prevent Alzheimer’s disease. Such an outrageous claim would require a stamp of approval from the Food and Drug Administration, and no product has yet been able to claim this feat.
Researchers agree that good health habits are of the utmost importance, which goes along with the saying, “what’s good for the heart is good for the brain”. In short, engage in many different types of mental activities. Do crosswords, Sudoku, acrostics, play bridge, read books, and join clubs. If you are a resident at an assisted living service, there are many activities and programs for you to choose from that offer these mentally stimulating activities.
Lastly, taking up a new hobby is also a great route to take. A new language or a new instrument that will challenge the brain in entirely different ways is a perfect choice and it’s never too late to start.

Carpet Cleaning The Healthy Way
13/09/2010 by FeedCrazy.
Some of the capret cleaners bought in stores are not good for our home because of the chemicals and harmfull substances in the cleaner. There is more availability found in the natural green prducts, so these should be used more often.
There are many strong chemicals that should not be used in a home with small children. Because children spend a considerable amount of time playing on the floor, they have more opportunities to touch chemical residue. Some of these chemicals have been known to cause children to become ill after a cleaning, this is not good. Harsh chemicals should be avoided because of their negative effect on the environment. Inproper disposal of these things cause harm to the environment, inhibitting wild life and poluting waterways.
It’s important to clean up spills as soon as possible to prevent staining. This is because it is a lot easier to clean stains off the carpet immediately than it is if they are soaked into the carpet for a period of time. Many spots can be taken care of with a natural cleaning solution.
Often it is cheaper to make your own cleaning solutions rather than purchase the already made versions. vinegar and baking soda can succesfully remove staind. A mixture of vinegar and baking soda are most effective when they are used on brand new stains. You can remove a spot simply pooring baking soda on it, allowing it some time to set in, and then vacuuming it away.
Luckily, there are more and more green spot cleaners available in stores to help eliminate stains naturally. One of the choices is EcoMist carpet cleaner. Not only is it safe and non-toxic, but it does a good job of removing stains. Strong Chemical side affects can be avoided by the use of all natural products found in the local grocery store as well as the internet.
When hiring a professional cleaner, ask if they are able to do natural cleanings without harsh chemicals. Carpet cleaning companies are stepping into the new way of things by using green and all natural products. Don’t believe the myth that only harsh chemicals can tackle stains on your carpet. In making an informed decission, you will want to do some research on the company you intend to hire.
Because a rented carpet cleaner has in fact been used by some one previously, it would be best to rinse it off in order to rid it of any checmicals or particles it may still have on it from the previous cleaning. This will guarantee that the cleaning you do will not inadvertently place chemicals on your carpet.
In order to stay safe from harmful chemicals, make every effort to stay away from them. Plus, using homemade cleaners will save you money while you’re at it.
